The abstract works by Kristaps Zariņš presented in the SEB exhibition reveal the freer and more concentrated side of his painting – colour, fields, rhythm and movement as an independent way of thinking. In these works the image is not tied to a specific narrative – it becomes an open space in which the viewer can search for meaning, tension, and direction.
Although this exhibition highlights Zariņš’s abstract painting, figurative compositions, mythological references and art-historical motifs also hold an important place in his creative practice. The artist does not use them as illustrations, but as living material for a conversation about the human being, time, body, emotions and freedom of thought.
In Zariņš’s works change is both a theme and a method. Colour, line and form are used directly and energetically, allowing the painting to develop as a movement between impulse and structure. This ability to remain open to process resonates with forward-looking thinking – the courage to look beyond the present and to see possibilities where everything is still in the process of becoming.
Kristaps Zariņš is a painter, Rector and Professor at the Art Academy of Latvia. He received his Master’s degree from the Art Academy of Latvia, and his practical Doctoral degree from the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology in Poland. The artist has also studied in Paris and has held solo exhibitions in Latvia and elsewhere in Europe.
Zariņš has also served several times on the jury of the SEB Grant in Painting. His pedagogical work at the Art Academy of Latvia is closely connected with the formation of several generations of artists – many SEB Grant in Painting laureates and finalists have studied painting or drawing with him during their academic path.
