In Atis Jākobsons’s works light becomes an entry point into an inner space. It is not only a visual effect, but a presence that invites the viewer to pause, calm the gaze and surrender to a slower way of perceiving. In his paintings form often recedes, giving space to light, breath and silence.
Jākobsons’s creative and research interests are closely connected with spiritual practices, meditation and the search for inner balance. He is interested in how art can become an experience that helps one come closer to oneself – not through explanation, but through feeling, silence and trust in the invisible. In this sense, his works function as spaces of calm concentration.
Metaphysics, archetypes, spiritual heritage and myths from different cultures are significant in the artist’s practice. However, these sources do not appear in his works directly or illustratively. Instead, they become an atmosphere – an experience of light and space in which the viewer can sense something beyond the noise of everyday life.
Atis Jākobsons is a painter, Associate Professor at the Painting Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, and is currently continuing his studies in the Professional Doctoral Programme at the Art Academy of Latvia. In 2009 he received the SEB Grant in Painting. Jākobsons has been nominated for the Purvītis Prize several times – in 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2022. The artist has held several solo exhibitions and has participated in group exhibitions in Latvia and abroad.
