Every decision we make affects the environment and leaves a significant footprint in the long run. To minimise the negative impact, knowledge and proactive action are key to making sustainable choices today. One of the companies currently implementing green and sustainable solutions in its routine is the parcel delivery company DPD Latvija.

Chairman of the Board Jānis Grants shares on how DPD Latvija implements greener transport solutions as well as opportunities for other companies to become more sustainable.

Why is environmentally friendly mobility so important?

According to 2018 data from European Environment Agency, freight transport is responsible for up to 30% of total CO2 emissions in cities. Air pollution in cities with more than 100,000 population, where CO2 emissions are the main contributor to pollution, can reduce the life expectancy of the population by up to 15 months.

For this reason, DPD Group, concerned about the quality of life of the population and implementing the company’s environmental sustainability policy through alternative transport solutions, has set itself the ambitious objective of reducing CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts in Europe’s 225 largest cities by 89% by 2025.

To achieve this, DPD Group companies will invest more than EUR 200 million to purchase 7,000 environmentally friendly transport solutions and set up 3,600 charging points for electric vehicles.

The fleet of alternative energy transport solutions will be made up of different vehicles, i.e., electric cars, small electric vehicles, natural gas vehicles, cargo bikes, etc., depending on local supply needs and the local capabilities of each company.

In this regard, DPD Latvija plans to gradually replace its existing delivery vehicles with a greener fleet by 2025, purchasing more than 40 electric cars costing EUR 3 million.

According to our calculations, this will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 250 tonnes per year. We bought the first 12 electric Volkswagen e-Crafter vans at the end of 2020, becoming the most environmentally friendly parcel delivery company in Latvia with the largest share of electric cars in Latvia.

Why is it important for the company to implement sustainable solutions in its business?

Sustainable business practices are also demanded by customers. Therefore, DPD Latvija is purposely improving the company's business processes by implementing environmentally friendly solutions, which at the same time improve the everyday life of employees and provide customers with a positive experience of working together.

The programme to implement environmentally friendly transport solutions in all countries represented by DPD Group is just one of DPD's initiatives aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and improving air quality. At the same time, new and upgraded sorting centers and warehouses are being built, the network of parcel lockers is being expanded and the range of environmentally friendly transport solutions is being diversified and supplemented not only by electric cars, but also by electric scooters, bicycles, and other alternative solutions.

Green leases on special terms

To support customers on their way to sustainable solutions, SEB banka offers green leases for the purchase of electric cars on more favourable terms. More information here.

DPD Latvija already offers parcel delivery with reduced CO2 emissions, invests in the expansion of the network of parcel lockers to ensure their wider availability, and offers customers convenient digital solutions with the possibility to change the time and place of delivery. All the activities we carry out in our daily lives are aimed at reducing the company's environmental footprint. Therefore, we are constantly looking for new, environmentally friendly solutions, which is appreciated by both our customers and our contractors.

Advantages of choosing electrics car for the company’s car fleet

Twelve CO2-free Volkswagen e-Crafter commercial vans are already in use for parcel delivery. Due to its energy efficiency, this transporter is particularly suitable for transporting parcels in urban areas. The vans are equipped with a 100 kW or 136 hp electric motor powered by a battery pack installed under the vehicle floor.

The fast-charging option can replenish up to 80% of a vehicle’s energy supply in 45 minutes. This is a fast and cost-effective solution because while the car is being prepared for deliveries, it can be charged and made ready to drive.

It is also worth mentioning the possibility of using public transport lines to avoid traffic jams and speed up the delivery route. Currently, the network of charging stations for electric cars throughout Latvia is large enough so that charging cars is not a problem.

What are the benefits of electric cars for businesses, population, and the environment as a whole?

According to a survey conducted by DPD Group last year, 70% of Europeans who regularly shop online believe that businesses need to be environmentally friendly. At the same time, almost half of those surveyed said they would be willing to pay more not only for the product but also for its delivery in order to minimise the impact on the environment.

This proves that there is a growing public concern about the impact of climate change and environmental sustainability issues. Consequently, businesses are also being called upon to take greater responsibility and contribute to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing pollution.

Our goal is to gradually reduce CO2 emissions by 30% per delivery by 2025 and to achieve zero emissions in transport in the long term. Purchasing environmentally friendly transport solutions helps us on the way to this goal to minimise air pollution in the cities where DPD operates and to improve the quality of life of the population.

What would you recommend to other companies thinking about buying electric cars?

By opting for parcel delivery using electric cars, we believe we are taking a step in the right direction and taking responsibility for the environment in which we live. I hope that this initiative will encourage other companies to take their first steps towards more environmentally friendly solutions in the name of a common goal.
